BLACKITY BLACK DIY PAINTED DRESSER - PART I

Typically I'm team never ever paint wood - but for a while now, I've wanted to find a vintage or thrifted dresser (that needed a little TLC) and paint it black. Below are some of the images that I've saved to my Pinterest board, and for months now I've be looking for a dresser to refurbish, but really haven't found what I was looking for. The must-haves for the piece were 1) it had to have good bones (dove-tailing would be a bonus) and made well, 2) it had to have some detail to it (wheels on the legs would be a bonus - I love me some wheels on big furniture), 3) the hardware would be original and in good shape, and finally 4) it had to look like it needed a lot of TLC (so that I felt ok about painting it). But up until Tuesday evening, I've come up short as it seemed one (or more) of my must have list items were always missing.

I haven't dabbled much on Facebook Marketplace, but after seeing all of the amazing finds my friends Ashlyn, Cameron, and Jen were sourcing, I thought I would give it a try. I typed in "vintage dresser" into the search engine and scrolled through a bunch of sponsored ads (which don't get frustrated because you'll find some treasures in between those ads), and I came across this dresser (shown below) and thought, hmmmm......maybe this is my dresser?

It checked off all the boxes! It was well-made, dove-tailed drawers, original hardware, lots of detail, and it needed some love. Check - check - check - and check! But (because I'm me) I didn't pull the trigger...yet. Later that evening my friend Cameron posted a question on IG, asking his followers what they were looking for and what area did they live in. From there, he was going to go on Facebook Marketplace to see if he could find those items (or something similiar). I wrote that I was looking for a vintage dresser to paint black, and a few hours later he gave me 3 options - one being the exact dresser I was already looking at, the one below.

Of course I felt this was the confirmation that I needed to buy the dresser (thank you Universe...and Cameron), so I contacted the seller to ask if it were still available, if I could pay for it now, and pick up the next day. Immediately she responded that it was available, accepted my offer of a lower price, and agreed to meet the next day.

It really is perfect and I can't wait to start working on it. There are some spots that will need some special love, but that's exactly what I was looking for. I've purchased some wood filler and over the weekend I am going to pick up a sander and figure out what type of paint finish I want. Originally I was thinking matte black - but am also leaning towards maybe a satin. What do you think? Matte, satin.....maybe even semi-gloss? Help!
